Canadian Embassy denies visas to Pak taekwondo athletes over lack of funds

Canadian Embassy denies visas to Pak taekwondo athletes over lack of funds

Pakistan's two promising taekwondo athletes will not be able to chip in the WTF Junior World Taekwondo Championship as they have been denied visas by the Canadian Embassy, which stated that they have insufficient funds to travel to Canada and feature in the event.
“We had fulfilled all the prerequisites including the invitations, registration of athletes, getting their licences from World Taekwondo Federation and booking of hotel along with reservation of tickets. All these were required by Canadian Federation. But it is very embarrassing that we've been denied visas,” Lt Col (retd) Waseem Ahmed, President Pakistan Taekwondo Federation, told APP on Tuesday.
The event is scheduled to take place at Burnaby, Canada from November 14-20.
Waseem said that Pakistan Sports Board through Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination had to furnish no objection certificates (NOCs), which had been applied by the federation well in time on September 28.
“Similarly, the amount is also furnished by the government of Pakistan after the grant of visa. This is how we have been getting visas for several international events in the past,” he maintained.
He stated that it was shocking for the players who attended a training camp for the last two and a half months in Islamabad to prepare for the championship. “It would have been a great opportunity for our young players to compete at this level.”
“Taekwondo is getting popularity in Pakistan. Recently we held 11th Korean Ambassador Championship in Islamabad and a large number of young athletes from across the country participated in it,” he said.
Waseem, however, said that Pakistan's two female US-based athletes — Mahnoor (-55kg) and Nirma Wasiq (-52kg) — would participate in the junior taekwondo event.
“We are trying our best to hire services of a foreign coach who can assist our female athletes during the competition,” he said.

Hafeez to take bowling action test on November 17 in Brisbane

Hafeez to take bowling action test on November 17 in Brisbane

International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday confirmed to DawnNews that Muhammad Hafeez will undergo bowling action test on November 17 at Brisbane, Australia.
“Bowling action Test of Muhammad Hafeez will be taken on November 17 at Brisbane,” said ICC spokesman.
"Lougborough and Cardiff ruled out as they cant furnish the reports of Hafeez’s bowling test for some weeks, so we are trying to send him to Brisbane and try to get result before Pakistan’s series against Australia," the spokesman added.
The 36-year-old seasoned all-rounder — having represented Pakistan in 50 Tests, 177 ODIs and 77 T20s — has faced problems with his bowling action since 2014.
In July 2015, he was banned from bowling in international cricket for 12 months after his action was found to be illegal for a second time since November 2014.
PCB had hired a bowling coach Carl Crowe to help Hafeez correct his bowling action before taking the bowling assessment test in England but he decided against taking any test because of his fitness issues.
Hafeez was dropped from Pakistan squad for series against West Indies as he was experiencing injury and form issues.
He was also not considered for the two Test match series against New Zealand starting this month.

India must compensate Pakistan if doesn't want to play, says Najam Sethi

India must compensate Pakistan if doesn't want to play, says Najam Sethi

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Executive Committee Chairman Najam Sethi on Tuesday revealed that Pakistan had demanded monetary compensation from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and International Cricket Council (ICC) for damages after India’s refusal to play the scheduled series.
“We have mentioned it clearly to BCCI and ICC in recent meeting that either India should play cricket with Pakistan or compensate us for damages,” said Najam Sethi while talking to media after meeting of PCB Governing Board.
Sethi further revealed that PCB Governing Board gave approval to make Pakistan Super League (PSL) a private limited company.
“PSL will be a part of PCB and will be a partner in profit,” said Najam Sethi.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Anurag Thakur had already requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to not place India and Pakistan in the same group during upcoming international events.
"Keeping in mind that the [Indian] government has adopted a new strategy to isolate Pakistan and in view of the public sentiment in the country, we request ICC not to put India and Pakistan in the same pool of the multi-nation tournaments," the BCCI president had said.
Cricketing ties between India and Pakistan are currently stalled, given the political tensions between the neighbours.
The men's teams have not played a bilateral series against each other since December-January 2012-13, when Pakistan visited India, but have met in various multi-team tournaments since then, including the World Cup, World T20, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup.
Pakistan Women are set to tour New Zealand for three ODIs in Nelson from November 13 to 17, counting towards the championship. It is understood the PCB wanted to play the India series ahead of this tour.
India and Pakistan's women's teams are also scheduled to play the Asia Cup in Thailand between November 25 and December 5.

Ronaldo caps ‘dream year’ after Real contract extension

UPDATED about 3 hours ago

MADRID: Life in Madrid certainly seems to agree with Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal forward signed a five-year contract extension with Real Madrid on Monday, capping an exceptional year after triumphs with his club in the Champions League and with his national team in the European Championship.
“This is the best moment in my life,” Ronaldo said. “After winning the Champions League with Real, the Euro 2016 with Portugal and now having my contract extended, it’s a dream year. This is too special. Life is good, I’m telling you.”
The deal, expected to protect Ronaldo’s status as the world’s highest paid footballer, will keep him tied to the European champions until he is 36 but will not be his last, the Portugal captain said on Monday.
The 31-year-old forward joined Real in 2009 and is the European champions’ all-time leading scorer with 371 goals in 360 games. He has led Real to two Champions League titles and to a La Liga title, among other trophies.
“The numbers are impressive. I certainly never expected to make history at the best club in the world,” he said. “This new contract is a dream come true. But this is my penultimate contract.
“I want to end my career at Real. This is the club that is in my heart and I will always be linked to it. I want to continue making history for the best club in the world.”
Yet, despite his incredible achievements in a Real shirt, the length of the contract has been questioned with Ronaldo struggling to match his form of old so far this season.
Having failed to even register a shot on target in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Leganes, Ronaldo has now gone five games without a goal at the Bernabeu for the first time in his career and he thanked Real president Florentino Perez for his unwavering support.
“Football has no memory, but you (Perez) have a memory and so does Real Madrid and that makes me happy,” he said.
“This day is too special to talk about scoring or not scoring,” continued Ronaldo. “It is a little bit of a blip, but that is part of life. I know that in two, three weeks or a month Cristiano will be there as always.”
Ronaldo is the latest Real player to have his contract extended past 2020. The club recently reached new deals with Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez.

ATP crowns Murray the king

ATP crowns Murray the king

PARIS: The ATP on Monday crowned Andy Murray king of the tennis world but the Scot must now plot how to stop Novak Djokovic grabbing back the number one place at the Tour Finals.
The 29-year-old Murray — the oldest player to become number one for the first time — won the Paris Masters on Sunday and immediately headed back to London to prepare for the finals.
“It might only be for one week. So I might as well try and enjoy it because I could lose it at the Tour Finals and never be there again,” said Murray.
Murray, who beat American John Isner in Paris for his eighth tournament win of the year and fourth in a row, should be top for at least two weeks.
Murray is 405 points above Djokovic in the new rankings. The Serb — who had been number one for 122 weeks before losing his Paris quarter final — could go top again if he lands a fifth straight Tour Finals crown.
“I wasn’t thinking so much about the cushion or anything like that at the top. I’m obviously happy I got there. It would be nice to finish the year No. 1” said Murray.
ATP World Tour Finals draw:
John McEnroe Group: Andy Murray (Britain), Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland), Kei Nishikori (Japan), Marin Cilic (Croatia).
Ivan Lendl Group: Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Milos Raonic (Canada), Gael Monfils (France), Dominic Thiem (Austria).

Chari, Ervine lead Zimbabwe recovery in final Sri Lanka Test

UPDATED about 5 hours ago

HARARE: An unbroken century stand between Brian Chari and Craig Ervine gave Zimbabwe a solid start after Asela Gunaratne’s maiden Test hundred had carried Sri Lanka to 504 on the second day of the second and final Test at the Harare Sports Club on Monday.
Playing just his second Test, Gunaratne scored 116 to marshal the tail to good effect and frustrate the Zimbabwean bowlers, before his dismissal brought the end of the Sri Lankan innings on the stroke of tea.
When Sri Lankan skipper Rangana Herath opened the bowling and grabbed the wickets of Tino Mawoyo and Hamilton Masakadza to reduce Zimbabwe to 17 for two, the hosts looked to be embarking on one of their trademark batting collapses.
But Chari and Ervine added 109 for the third wicket without being parted, taking Zimbabwe to stumps on 126 for two with both batsmen closing the day on 60 not out.
“We would have liked to have a few more wickets down but hopefully we can grab a few early on tomorrow,” said Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford. “We’ve seen Rangana turn some deliveries this evening, so once he gets a few going he becomes more of a factor.”
The tourists began the day on 290 for five, with Gunaratne on 13, and despite losing centurion Dhananjaya de Silva they were able to make rapid progress during the morning session.
De Silva was caught and bowled by leg-spinner Graeme Cremer for 127, before Gunaratne added 54 for the seventh wicket with Dilruwan Perera at a swift rate.
Perera was then trapped lbw by Cremer for 34, but Gunaratne went to lunch on 64 having helped Sri Lanka add 124 runs in the session.
After lunch the 30-year-old increased his rate of scoring further in a 75-run stand for the eighth wicket with Herath, who made 27.
Seamer Donald Tiripano had Herath caught behind and then bowled Suranga Lakmal, but No 11 Lahiru Kumara held on long enough for Gunaratne to reach three figures and carry the score past 500.
It was the fifth straight Test match in which Zimbabwe, who trail 1-0 in the two-match series, had conceded 500 runs in an innings.
Under pressure after two failures in the first Test, Chari not only put up stern resistance, but also took the attack to Sri Lanka.
The right-hander became the first Zimbabwean Test player to hit his first ball for six as he lofted Herath over long-on — then repeated the stroke to go to his maiden Test fifty.
While Chari had two lbw decisions overturned on review, Ervine was generally untroubled as he stroked eight boundaries and the partnership rattled along at 3.7 runs per over.
“It was an individual plan to be more positive in the way that we got ourselves in,” said Ervine. “We need to turn up for that first hour tomorrow, and then the first session, and try and get through without losing a wicket.”

Rabada stars as SA complete stunning turnaround

 UPDATED about 3 hours ago

PERTH: Rising paceman Kagiso Rabada took 5-92 as South Africa completed an emphatic 177-run victory over Australia in the first Test on Monday after dismissing the hosts for 361 just before tea on the final day.
The tourists claimed a third successive victory at the WACA Ground after 2008 and 2012 triumphs and a 1-0 lead in the series, which continues in Hobart on Saturday and concludes with a day-night game at Adelaide Oval.
Australia’s batsmen were unable to cope with Rabada’s pace and swing as the 21-year-old took his fourth five-wicket haul in his ninth Test, making light of the absence of South Africa’s injured pace spearhead Dale Steyn.
It was Australia’s first Test defeat at home since that 2012 loss at the WACA and there was more bad news at the end of the day when it was confirmed that opener Shaun Marsh had broken his finger and would not play in Hobart.
South Africa declared on 540-8 after lunch on Sunday, leaving Australia with an imposing 539-run victory target or more realistically almost five sessions to bat out for a draw.
It was a remarkable turnaround after Australia, having dismissed South Africa for 242 on day one, were 158-0 before collapsing to 244 all out.
“We had some harsh words at the end of day one, we were very disappointed with how we played, and we wanted to come back and put in a real solid performance,” said South Africa captain Faf du Plessis. “The way we responded was quite ridiculous, it was incredible the way we turned it around and we backed it up on day three. Since day one, it’s just been unbelievable.”
Australia had resumed on 169-4 on Monday and Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc were dismissed before lunch with Peter Siddle following after the break.
Wicket-keeper Peter Nevill, who finished on 60 not out, and Josh Hazlewood stalled the march to victory with a dogged partnership of 65 before Australia’s No 10 batsman was dismissed for 29 to give Temba Bavuma his maiden Test wicket.
Nathan Lyon extended the tail further with a 21-ball eight before he was trapped in front by debutant spinner Keshav Maharaj to conclude the match.
“Disappointing,” said Australia captain Steve Smith. “We need to try and let this performance go and come out in Hobart and try and turn it around. We’re going to have to play better cricket against a quality South African team if we’re going to do it.”
Khawaja had provided the most spirited resistance for much of the innings and after he fell lbw to J.P. Duminy’s part-time spin three runs shy of his fifth Test century, Australia’s already tough task looked all bar impossible.
Man-of-the-match Rabada accounted for Mitchell Marsh (26) and Starc (13), both lbw, to take his match tally to seven wickets.
Bavuma, whose brilliant run out accounted for opener David Warner on Sunday, almost claimed another key victim with his first delivery in Test cricket.
Khawaja, on 84, was plumb lbw after the ball hit a crack and thudded into his front pad but the 26-year-old had overstepped the mark and umpire Nigel Llong called a no-ball.
Left-hander Khawaja had started the morning on 58 and continued to display the same grit and determination that got him through to the close on day four, hitting 11 fours and three sixes in his 182-ball knock.
Duminy’s first delivery skidded into Khawaja’s back pad, however, and the 29-year-old became the second Australian batsman to perish on 97 after Warner in the first innings, the wicket that triggered the collapse.

Qatar World Cup a ‘done deal’, organiser claims

UPDATED about 5 hours ago

Qatar World Cup a ‘done deal’, organiser claims

DOHA: Holding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is a “done deal”, a confident head of the Gulf state’s tournament organising committee said Monday, shrugging off ongoing corruption and human rights concerns.
Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, told the local Arabic daily Al-Sharq newspaper that football’s biggest tournament will go ahead in the Middle East despite calls elsewhere for Qatar to be stripped of hosting rights.
“The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar, the first in a Middle Eastern, Arab and Muslim country,” said Al-Thawadi. “It is a done deal.”
He added that World Cup organisers in the Gulf had a “generally positive” relationship with FIFA, football’s governing body.
Qatar is the subject of an ongoing corruption investigation being carried out by Switzerland’s Attorney General office.
Launched in May 2015, the Swiss legal team is investigating the bidding process amid allegations of corruption for the 2022 World Cup — and the 2018 tournament in Russia.
But Al-Thawadi told Al-Sharq that Qatar had nothing to fear.
“I am totally confident our file is clean,” he said.
Qatar also faces continued criticism from human rights groups over the treatment of its labour force helping to build World Cup venues and related infrastructure.
That issue is likely to come into focus again next month when Qatar is expected to announce the end of its much-criticised “kafala” labour system, the source of much criticism.
“Kafala”, which places restrictions on workers’ ability to change jobs and travel, is to be replaced by a contract system.
However, this is unlikely to placate critics, who have accused Doha of not going far enough with reforms.
The issue of worker-safety is also ongoing.
Last month Qatar announced its first “work-related” death in regard to the World Cup, when a labourer died at the Al-Wakrah Stadium.
“What concerns us now is that this accident is not to be repeated. There is a comprehensive investigation at the moment and we are going to finish it soon,” said Al-Thawadi.
He also tackled the thorny issue of venue numbers and said organisers would like to see eight stadiums used during the 2022 World Cup.
FIFA told AFP last week that a final decision on the number of venues had been pushed back until next year at the earliest.
Qatar’s successful bid for the tournament allowed for up to 12 stadiums to be used in 2022.
“We are confident that we will not be asked to implement twelve stadiums,” he said. “We feel that eight stadiums is enough for Qatar.”
So far, Qatar has said it will spend up to $10 billion (9 billion euros) on stadium construction.
If eight stadiums are eventually used it will mean the 2022 finals will have the smallest number of venues at any tournament since Argentina in 1978.

Messi reaches 500-goal mark, inspires Barca comeback

UPDATED about 5 hours ago

SEVILLE: A mesmeric Lionel Messi scored his 500th goal for Barcelona and helped the Catalan club to come from behind and beat Sevilla 2-1 in a thrilling encounter on Sunday as the champions kept the pressure on La Liga leaders Real Madrid.
Barca were put under immense pressure from kick-off and fell behind to Vitolo’s 15th minute strike.
Messi levelled just before halftime following a slew of missed chances from the hosts.
Reaching that landmark prompted Barca to tweet: “Counting official matches and friendlies, Messi reaches the figure of 500 goals for FC Barcelona. Well done Leo!”
After the break, Barca took control and Luis Suarez fired in the winner in the 61st minute to save them from a second defeat in six days.
Barca stay two points behind Real, who lead the standings with 27 points. Villarreal beat Real Betis 2-0 to move up to third, three points behind Barca. Fifth-placed Sevilla, on 21 points, trail Atletico Madrid on goal difference.
Sunday’s meeting between Jorge Sampaoli’s relentless Sevilla and a Barcelona side smarting from 3-1 defeat at Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday promised a lot and lived up to the hype as a breathtaking end-to-end encounter ensued.
The hosts had two shots on goal inside 50 seconds, but from a Sevilla corner Barca broke forward at lightning speed and Suarez’s effort from Neymar’s layoff was brilliantly saved by Sergio Rico.
Sevilla remained on the front foot for most of the first-half and opened the scoring as Luciano Vietto’s through ball caught Sergi Roberto unawares and Vitolo swooped in to slot past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
Sevilla grew in confidence and looked to grab another, Vietto firing wide from a tight angle and Vitolo crashing over the bar.
But Barca drew level following a wonderful break by Messi which drew in Denis Suarez and Neymar before the Argentine finished off.
Messi is the club’s all-time leading scorer with 469 goals in official matches and 31 in friendlies.
“There is no one like him and our objective as a team is to look for Leo as much as possible,” Barca boss Luis Enrique told Spanish TV station Movistar. “The capacity Messi has to play in any position and interpret what is happening on the field is laudable.”
Not content with that milestone, Messi set up Suarez’s winner with a precise pass to end Sevilla’s 100 percent record at home in the league and Europe.
“Comebacks like this always make a team stronger, especially when you remember no-one else has won at this ground,” said Enrique.
“It was a wonderful game for attacking players, who wanted the ball and wanted to take risks. It made for a hectic game. They took the lead then we found solutions. I’m very happy with how the day has gone.”

Federer can still bounce back, says Edberg

UPDATED about 3 hours ago

Federer can still bounce back, says Edberg
LONDON: Roger Federer has fallen outside the world’s top 10 for the first time since 2002 but he could still win another Grand Slam title, according to former great Stefan Edberg.
While Andy Murray’s rise to world number one was the main talking point of Monday’s new ATP rankings, 17-times major champion Federer’s slide to 16th was largely overlooked.
The Swiss ended his season in July in a bid to recover fully from knee surgery, although he is aiming to be fit for the Australian Open in January.
At 35, however, logic suggests Federer’s days of challenging for silverware may be numbered. His last grand slam title came at Wimbledon in 2012.
But former world number one Edberg, who has coached Federer, disagrees.
“I thought in the past years he would have won one, he was so close,” six-times major champion Edberg told Tennis World.
“It becomes even tougher, he is not young any more but there is still hope. If there’s one who can do it, it’s Roger,” the 50-year-old Swede added.
“But it will be an emotional challenge for him to come back next year.”

Cristiano Ronaldo extends Real Madrid deal to 2021

Cristiano Ronaldo controls a ball during the Spanish league football match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.—AFP

Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to retire at Real Madrid after agreeing a bumper new five-year contract to be signed on Monday that ties him to the Spanish giants until 2021.
“The official event for the renewal of Cristiano Ronaldo's contract will take place tomorrow, Monday November 7, at 1:30pm [local time] in the presidential box at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium,” Madrid said in a statement on Sunday.
“The Portuguese forward will extend his contract until 30 June 2021 at the event attended by club president Florentino Perez and the player himself.”
Ronaldo, 31, follows in the footsteps of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos as the latest Real star to agree a contract extension in recent weeks as the club prepares to serve a one-year transfer ban imposed by FIFA.
According to UK media reports Bale's lucrative new six-year deal will earn the Welshman as much as $750,000 a week before tax.
However, Ronaldo, whose previous deal expires in 2018 is expected to remain the highest earner at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ronaldo is already the world's highest paid sportsman according to American magazine Forbes, raking in $88 million between his salary and endorsements in 2016.
Ronaldo has shot himself into the Real record books by plundering 371 goals in 360 games in his eight seasons since swapping Manchester United for Madrid for a then world record fee in 2009.
And Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane called on Ronaldo to end his playing days in Spain like he did when retiring from club football in 2006.
“What he has to do is finish his career here,” said Zidane after Sunday's 3-0 win over Leganes extended Madrid's lead at the top of La Liga.
“Cristiano is unique for what he has done and what he is doing.
“It is his dream to end his career here. I am happy that he can renew and finish with this white shirt like I did a long time ago.” As well the individual accolades of winning the Ballon d'Or in 2013 and 2014 for the world's best player since joining Madrid, Ronaldo has won eight trophies with Los Blancos.
Most notably he scored in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid as Real ended a 12-year wait to win their 10th European Cup.
Ronaldo was Atletico's scourge again as he netted the winning penalty in a shootout victory to once again win the Champions League in May.
His only La Liga title came under Jose Mourinho in the 2011/12 season.
However, arguably Ronaldo's crowning glory came in leading Portugal to their first ever international tournament win at Euro 2016.
After suffering knee ligament damage in the Euro 2016 final, Ronaldo has endured a slow start to this season.
His scoreless performance against Leganes extended his worst ever goal drought at the Bernabeu to five matches.
However, Madrid's confidence in handing out a huge deal that will secure Ronaldo's position as the world's highest paid sportsman has not been shaken.
“There is nothing wrong, he is not worried,” insisted Zidane.
“He looks good, he is motivated, he likes to scores goals and even more so in this stadium, but he is calm.”

Australia overcome stubborn green-shirts in Sultan of Johor Cup final 3-1

Australia overcome stubborn green-shirts in Sultan of Johor Cup final 3-1

With nothing to lose, Pakistan U-21 colts put a strong show against favorite Australia, who thrashed them 8-1 in round robin, before going down 3-1 in the final of the Sultan of Johor Cup Under 21 Hockey Tournament, which concluded on Sunday in Johor Bahru in Malaysia.
According to information made available, green-shirts surprised everyone when they went ahead in the seventh minute through the first penalty corner.
Instead of Abu Bakr, Pakistan's regular striker, also their top scorer in the event with four goals, it was 6' 3” tall Hassan Anwar who took it. His fast high flick on goal keeper's left side was unstoppable.
Australia replied in the similar manner within six minutes. Gerrard Frazer's penalty corner conversion was almost a replica of Hassan Anwar's effort.
The pace of the game went up with score-line showing 1-1.
Pakistani showed good temperament in defense and were fast to tackle Australian attacks. A melee in Pakistani circle resulted in Australia's second penalty corner in 32nd minute.
Goal keeper Muneeb brilliantly palmed it away with an outstretched left arm. The score was locked at 1-1 at the end of the first half.
The third quarter was dominated by the Aussies, who repeatedly entered Pakistan's circle. Three more penalty corners came their way.
On the fifth of the day, the penalty corner hit struck Pakistani line stopper's foot. The resultant penalty stroke was converted by Blake Govers and Australia were 2-1 ahead in the 47th minute.
Pakistan's sporadic attacks did create a few chances including their second penalty corner of the day but Australian deep defence managed to keep the lead intact.
With just four minutes left, Blake Govers' second goal off a penalty corner squeezed all hopes for Pakistani youngsters of making a late comeback.
However, securing second place on the podium in the event should be considered a good performance from Pakistan, who had never finished above fourth place at any of the five previous editions of Sultan of Johor Cup.
In the last two events, they ended at bottom-rock sixth position.
With Pakistan's second position in this tournament, it could be hoped from the green-shirts that they will put another strong show in Junior World Cup, which will be played next month from December 8-18 in Lucknow, India.
Japan secured third position followed by England, Malaysia and New Zealand in fourth, fifth and sixth position respectively.

Fit-again Mustafizur set to return for New Zealand tour

DHAKA: Bangladesh cricket authorities said on Saturday they are expecting pace prodigy Mustafizur Rahman will be available in their upcoming December series in New Zealand as they declared the squad for the tour.
Nicknamed “The Fizz”, the 21-year-old left-arm pacer missed the recent home series against England recovering from shoulder surgery that he underwent in Britain on Aug 10.
Mustafizur aggravated an old shoulder injury in July during his short stint with English county side Sussex in the Twenty20 Blast competition when he could only play in two matches before being sidelined.
“He has already started bowling in the nets and we hope he will be fully fit before our New Zealand series starts,” said selector Habibul Bashar.
Bangladesh will play three One-day Internationals, two Tests and two Twenty20 Internationals in New Zealand from Dec 26 to Jan 24.
Prior to the visit, Bangladesh will hold a camp in Sydney where they will play two Twenty20 warm-up matches against local teams Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunders.
Selectors included Mustafizur in Bangladesh’s 20-member squad for the Australia and New Zealand trip that was announced late on Friday.
Unheralded Tanveer Haider is the only surprise inclusion in the squad, which also retained paceman Subashis Roy, who was in the squad for the recent second Test against England but did not play.
Leg spinner Haider impressed in a recent two-day warm-up match against England when he picked up 4-53.
“We were looking for a good leg spinner for quite some time. We hope Tanveer would deliver it,” said Habibul about the 24-year-old who has six first-class centuries.
Selectors also included uncapped pacer Ebadat Hossain and teenage batsman Nazmul Hossain as a developing prospect though they are not officially part of the squad.
The squad did not include bastman Nasir Hossain and pacemen Al-Amin Hossain and Rubel Hossain in the team.
Probables: Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Mahmudullah Riyad, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman, Soumya Sarkar, Mosaddek Hossain, Nurul Hassan, Mehedi Hasan, Shuvagata Hom, Taijul Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Shafiul Islam, Subashis Roy, Mohammad Shahid and Tanveer Haider.

Anderson makes surprise return to England squad

MUMBAI: England players Ben Stokes (L), Ben Duckett and captain Alastair Cook bat during a training session at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday.—AFP

MUMBAI: Captain Alastair Cook on Saturday hailed top bowler Jimmy Anderson’s surprise return from injury as he insisted England would revel in their status as underdogs during their tour of India.
Cook said that Anderson, England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker with 463 scalps, had been given the all-clear following a shoulder problem and could arrive in India as early as Tuesday.
“It’s really good news. He’s ready to come so it’s just about trying to get him out to Rajkot as quick as we can,” Cook, 31, told reporters in Mumbai.
The first Test of the five-match series starts in Rajkot on Wednesday as India seek revenge for a home series loss to England four years ago.
The powerful Anderson will miss the opening Test but could be ready to lead England’s attack for the second match, which starts in Andhra Pradesh state, on Nov 17, said Cook.
Anderson suffered a fractured shoulder blade last summer and had been dogged by a recurrence of the injury but passed fitness tests back home on Friday while the rest of the England squad were already training in India.
“I was chatting to him yesterday and the second Test is a good possibility. We’ll know when we see how his body reacts when he’s out here,” said the skipper.
Anderson took more wickets than any other pace bowler on either side when England won the 2012 series in India and Cook believes the fired-up 34-year-old could be the difference again.
“He’s worked incredibly hard to get back and has come back so much quicker than we thought. He’s up for it and is not just coming here to make up the numbers so that’s great for us. He wants to make a difference in this series,” Cook told a post-training press conference.
India are number one in the world and have not lost a Test series at home since left-handed batsman Cook expertly lead England to a 2-1 victory four years ago.
England’s spin attack is weaker than it was back then when Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar excelled on Indian soil but Cook is confident that his side can spring a surprise.
“Unfortunately we haven’t quite got that experience of probably top quality spinners. [But] Mo [Moeen Ali] has been very successful against India in the past.
“Rash [Adil Rashid] has done very well in one day cricket and we probably haven’t seen the best of him in Test cricket yet.
“So we’ve actually got more options in this squad than we did in the last squad,” he said.
Cook warned critics not to write off his team even if they do lose in the opening Test recalling his side’s heroics the last time they toured India.
“I remember sitting in a press conference after the first Test and everyone was talking about how you’re going to stop India winning 4-0 and we managed to turn it around and win 2-1. It shows that anything is possible.”
England are looking to bounce back from a humiliating defeat to minnows Bangladesh last week and Cook believes that being underdogs, rather than favourites, will work in his side’s favour.
“We’re under no illusions about how hard it could be but being an underdog takes a lot of pressure off us,” said Cook.

Boudebouz scores twice as Montpellier outclass Marseille

MONTPELLIER: Algerian playmaker Ryad Boudebouz scored twice as Montpellier beat Olympique Marseille 3-1 on Friday to leave new OM coach Rudi Garcia still looking for a first league win in charge.
Renowned for his passing skills, Boudebouz netted both of his goals in the first half and Steve Mounie also struck for the hosts at the Stade de la Mosson with Florian Thauvin replying for Marseille.
That was their first goal in Ligue 1 since the takeover of the club by American tycoon Frank McCourt and Garcia’s appointment last month, with Marseille having drawn 0-0 with Paris St Germain and Bordeaux in their previous two outings.
Boudebouz put the hosts ahead in front in the fourth minute, slotting home from the rebound after goalkeeper Yohann Pele parried away a shot from Mounie.
Morgan Sanson hit the outside of the post for Montpellier with a superb volley before they doubled their advantage nine minutes prior to the interval.
Souleymane Camara’s ball in from the right was deflected by Maxime Lopez into the path of Boudebouz, who took a touch and volleyed in his sixth of the season.
Marseille got one back early in the second half as Thauvin headed in a Romain Alessandrini cross from close range, but Montpellier soon restored their two-goal lead as Sanson picked out Mounie to score.
The result leaves Marseille in mid-table, above Montpellier on goal difference, and confirms to Garcia the size of task that lies in store for him at the southern giants.
