Four officers likely to be called back from India

Mehmood Akhtar

Mehmood Akhtar
ISLAMABAD: The government is considering pulling out from India four of its officers posted in Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi, days after Indian authorities declared one official persona non grata.
“This is under consideration. A final decision would be taken shortly,” a source at the Foreign Office said on Monday.
The names of the officers — commercial counsellor Syed Furrukh Habib and first secretaries Khadim Hussain, Mudassir Cheema and Shahid Iqbal — were made public after Indian officials released to media a recorded statement of a high commission staffer Mehmood Akhtar, who was expelled from India after being declared persona non grata.
Mr Akhtar told Dawn that he had given the statement under duress.
“They took me to a police station after detaining me where I was forced to read out a written statement provided by them in which the names of the four officers were given and was told to state that they belonged to Pakistan’s intelligence services,” the former high commission official, who returned to Islamabad last week, said.
Mr Akhtar narrated how he was manhandled and picked from outside a zoo while on his way back from Nizamuddin shrine and taken to a Delhi police station, where he was coerced into recording a statement before being expelled from the country.
Indian officials, he said, tortured him to extract the statement and threatened to inject him with heart attack inducing injection if he refused to comply.
The incident has jeopardised the security of the officers and their families besides restricting the normal diplomatic functioning of the high commission.
Pakistan and India have in the past expelled each other’s diplomats and officials due to their tense relationship, but it is one of those rare occasions where one of the countries took the extreme step of revealing the identities of officers.
Pakistani officials believe that India did this on purpose to heighten the tensions.
“We consider it as a serious breach of diplomatic norms. The Indian move has complicated the already tense situation and threatened the lives of our diplomatic staff,” an officer said, adding it was a “deliberate and provocative action”.
Talking about the difficulties being faced by high commission staff, the officer said a son of one of the officers had to be taken back from school after he was ridiculed by his class fellows following this disclosure.
He said public attitude towards high commission staff had stiffened.
One of the family members of the staff earlier talking over the phone to Dawn criticised the Pakistan government for “not proactively and forcefully” responding to the threats to their safety. “It is a matter of life and death for us, but the government’s response has been too meek,” the family member said.

BELIEVING YOU CAN BE SMARTER ACTUALLY MAKES YOU SMARTER

einstein1

It’s no surprise that self confidence plays an important role in our performance, but findings published by the American Psychological Association suggest all it takes to boost your smarts is believing that you can be smarter.
Despite a lot of evidence to the contrary, many people believe that intelligence is fixed, and, moreover, that some racial and social groups are inherently smarter than others. Merely evoking these stereotypes about the intellectual inferiority of these groups (such as women and Blacks) is enough to harm the academic [performance] of members of these groups. Social psychologist Claude Steele and his collaborators (2002) have called this phenomenon “stereotype threat.”
Yet social psychologists Aronson, Fried, and Good (2001) have developed a possible antidote to stereotype threat. They taught African American and European American college students to think of intelligence as changeable, rather than fixed – a lesson that many psychological studies suggests is true. Students in a control group did not receive this message. Those students who learned about IQ’s malleability improved their grades more than did students who did not receive this message, and also saw academics as more important than did students in the control group.
Racial, gender, and social stereotypes aside, it’s a good bit of information to keep in mind next time you run into a stumbling block in your work, studies, or hobbies. Your smarts aren’t set in stone, and simply believing that can significantly improve your ability to learn.

China assembles first indigenously designed aircraft carrier

China has completed design work on its first indigenously designed aircraft carrier, media reports quoted a spokesperson for the country’s ministry of defence on Thursday.
According to the reports, equipment was being installed to country’s first domestically-built warship at a shipyard after the assembling of the hull was completed Chinese experts.
Chinese navy is successfully operating its sole aircraft carrier Lianning,  a 60,000-tonne refurbished Soviet-era warship and Pentagon said last year that Beijing could build multiple aircraft carriers over the next 15 years.
The United States navy is operating 10 aircraft carriers and work on The $13-billion USS Gerald R. Ford is also underway.
India inducted an old aircraft carrier from Russia in 2014 while an ageing British vessel is set to retire this year.

Zimbabwe rally after collapse

Zimbabwe rally after collapse

HARARE: Half-centuries from Zimbabwe batsmen Peter Moor and Graeme Cremer kept Sri Lanka at bay, but the hosts were nevertheless on track for a significant first-innings lead on day three of the first Test at Harare Sports Club on Monday.
Having seen Zimbabwe lose five wickets for 47 runs on the third morning as they replied to Sri Lanka´s 537 all out, Moor and Cremer put on 132 for the seventh wicket to stabilise the innings.
Although Moor succumbed to a short ball from debutant Lahiru Kumara to depart for 79 in the afternoon session, Cremer batted on to reach a career-best 62 not out as Zimbabwe went to tea on 291 for seven.
Zimbabwe´s collapse in the morning owed more to a series of rash strokes than trying conditions or outstanding bowling, as they resumed on a promising 88 for one.
Opener Tino Mawoyo started the trend when he pulled a short ball from Suranga Lakmal straight to the man in the deep to depart for 45, and two overs later Hamilton Masakadza prodded forward to edge Lakmal to slip for 33.
A careless sweep from Sean Williams saw him pick out deep midwicket, and a lack of foot movement accounted for Craig Ervine and Malcolm Waller as they were trapped lbw by Dilruwan Perera.
At 139 for six, Zimbabwe were in danger of being shot out and forced to follow on, but Moor´s counter-attacking knock changed the momentum of the innings.
His two early sixes forced the field back, while Cremer was content to provide dogged support from the other end.
The pair were only separated when Kumara produced a quick bouncer that Moor had no answer to, as the batsman fended to slip.
Kumara went on to knock Cremer´s helmet off his head and rattle the Zimbabwe skipper, who was fortunate to see his hook shot dropped at deep backward square-leg soon after.

West Indies at 244-6 following Pakistan's 281

West Indies were 244-6 at close on the second day of the third and final Test against Pakistan in Sharjah on Monday.
Kraigg Brathwaite (95) and Jason Holder (six) were at the crease as West Indies still trail Pakistan's first innings total of 281 by just 37 runs with four wickets intact.
Brathwaite anchored the West Indian innings with 95 runs not out after they were struggling at 38-3, putting two solid stands of 83 each with Roston Chase (50) for the fifth wicket and with Shane Dowrich (47) for the sixth.
This gives West Indies a good position for the first time in the series against Pakistan who are targeting a 3-0 clean sweep after winning the first Test by 56 runs in Dubai and the second by 133 runs in Abu Dhabi.
Brathwaite batted solidly as he negotiated Pakistan's spin-cum-pace attack with full confidence, having so far hit ten boundaries.
West Indies lost Jermaine Blackwood for 23 soon after lunch and it looked like they would once again concede a lead but Brathwaite held the innings well with Chase and Dowrich.
Chase hit leg-spinner Yasir Shah for a straight six to bring up his fifty but was caught in the slip off Mohammad Amir in the next over.
His 89-ball stay was spiced with six fours and a six.
Dowrich then complimented Brathwaite as they took West Indies to 234, with Dowrich benefitting from a catch off Wahab Riaz's no ball on 15 and a let-off by Younis Khan on 21.
Dowrich was finally bowled by Riaz from an inside edge.
West Indies were struggling when they lost the key wicket of Darren Bravo for 11 before lunch.
Bravo miscued a drive off a flighted ball from spinner Zulfiqar Babar and was smartly snapped up by a diving Amir at extra cover, his first catch in 20 Tests.
Amir had no catch in his first 19 Tests ─ most matches without a catch for a player from the start of his career.
West Indies got off to a disastrous start, with opener Leon Johnson trapped leg-before by Riaz in the fourth over for just one.
Bravo, who made a fighting hundred in the first Test, was left frustrated by short-pitched deliveries from Riaz and Amir before getting out.
Marlon Samuels also did not last long, trapped leg-before by leg-spinner Yasir Shah without scoring to leave West Indies struggling on 38-3.
Earlier, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo finished with figures of 4-77 while fast bowlers Shannon Gabriel took 3-67 and Alzarri Joseph 2-57 to dismiss Pakistan for 281.
Pakistan added 26 to their overnight score before losing Amir for 20 and Shah for 12, both to Joseph. The pair added 32 for the ninth wicket.
Pakistan lead the three-match series 2-0 after winning the first Test in Dubai by 56 runs and the second in Abu Dhabi by 133.
Earlier, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo finished with figures of 4-77 while fast bowlers Shannon Gabriel took 3-67 and Alzarri Joseph 2-57 to dismiss Pakistan who resumed on 255-8.

Maryam Nawaz sends Rs1 billion defamation notice to PTI's Naeemul Haq

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz on Monday sent a Rs1 billion defamation notice to notice to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Spokesman Naeemul Haq, it has been learnt.
The notice was sent after Naeemul Haq accused Maryam Nawaz of being responsible for the security leaks regarding the high-level national security meeting.
“The accusation/statement against our client is defamatory, false, mala fide, scandalous, untrue, without any evidence,” added the notice.
The notice demands from the PTI leader to tender an unconditional apology and retract the accusations made. It also demands for the same to be published in newspapers.
“In case of failure, our client [Maryam] will be constrained to initiate legal proceedings, including civil and criminal, against you at your own risk,” stated the legal notice which was sent thorugh Sardar Kalim Ilyas, Advocate Supreme Court.
The PTI leader was also asked to, “Stop making such accusations for which you have no proof, which is false and untrue”.
The accusation was broadcast on October 31 on different channels, including ARY News Channel, and tickers were also run on news channel, read the legal notice sent to Haq.
Earlier this month, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had sent a legal notice to PTI chairman Imran Khan under the defamation law, requiring the latter to make a public apology and withdraw ‘false’ allegations of corruption levelled against the former.
The notice sent through Advocate Mustafa Ramday under Section 8 of the Defamation Ordinance 2002 says: “Your false vilification of Shahbaz Sharif’s intentions has the potential to erode the carefully built trust with domestic and international partners that has wider ramifications on development in Punjab and national progress overall.”

Clashes, blockades and teargas bar PTI supporters from travelling to Islamabad

Police and Frontier Constabulary personnel used tear gas shells to disperse thousands of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) protesters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Swabi en route to Islamabad on Monday to join the party's planned Nov 2 'lockdown' of the capital.
Around 5,000 stick-wielding party workers are trying to remove barricades put in place by police using cranes near the Swabi Interchange, while law enforcement personnel are using tear gas shelling and rubber bullets to stop the protesters.
The PTI protesters have vowed to move on undeterred towards the federal capital, they are trying to remove containers using cranes as the night falls.
Some protesters also fainted due to the shelling, while others were injured by rubber bullets. Those affected were taken to hospitals, DawnNews reported.

Pemra suspends licence of Nickelodeon channel for airing Indian content

Image result for nick logo
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Monday suspended the licence of Nickelodeon channel for airing cartoons dubbed in Hindi language.
The electronic media watchdog announced that the licence was suspended over violation of Pemra directives, following the October 19 decision taken by the authority.
The authority had announced on October 19 that any satellite channel or those with landing rights would face bans over screening of Indian content.
The statement issued by Pemra said that all distribution networks have been informed about the suspension of Nickelodeon channels. The decision will come into effect immediately.
ARY Communications is the channel’s landing rights holder in Pakistan.
Pemra has imposed a complete ban on airing Indian content on local television and FM radio channels.
It has been implemented on the cable networks, including the channels being operated by cable operators.
The Pemra decision is largely seen as a tit-for-tat move after a similar action by some channels and the entertainment industry in India against Pakistani content and artists.
