TAXILA: Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan of Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Saturday said the provision of speedy justice was the top priority of the judiciary.
He stated this while addressing a judicial conference on the ‘upholding of rule of law’ in connection with the 150th anniversary celebrations of the LHC.
Justice Khan added that judges of the high court and subordinate courts were striving for upholding the rule of law. “It is our constitutional duty to decide cases without any pressure.” He said the purpose of holding the anniversary celebrations was to make the citizens realise that an active judiciary was available for the protection of their fundamental rights. He advised the young lawyers to earn credibility by setting a true example of a classic lawyer.
He said the judiciary had played a vital role in maintaining the rule of law and a close coordination among the stakeholders was vital for dispensation of speedy justice.
He was of the view that peace, progress and prosperity in the country were possible only with the provision of justice. He said justice safeguarded a society from unrest and rule of law should be the top priority so that everybody gets justice and nobody became victim of injustice.
He also said it was the prime duty of judges to provide justice to the citizens.
He said judges should dispense justice without any fear. Besides being a milestone, the main purpose of holding the sesquicentennial celebrations is to reach out to the common man being the ultimate beneficiary of the justice system and to demonstrate that a competent and functional judiciary is there to dispense justice.
He lauded the role of the bars for their continuous struggle for the supremacy of law, and described them as an integral part of the judicial system.
He said all the events which would take place during the celebrations would enable the citizens to understand the past, present and future of the judiciary in Punjab.
District and Sessions Judge Sohail Nasir said on the direction of LHC Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, ceremonies were being held across the province in connection with the 150th anniversary of the LHC and all stakeholders were participating in them in Rawalpindi.
He said the judicial system was being upgraded on modern lines with the help of the IT department to ensure speedy justice. He said all cases filed in Rawalpindi till 2013 had been decided and the remaining backlog would be cleared soon.
Former district and sessions judge Manzoor Ahmed Malik, Arshad Mehmood Cheema and civil judge Kiran Jehangir also spoke on the occasion.
